Nelson Pinot Noir 2014
Richmond Plains produced New Zealand’s first Pinot Noir from both certified organic and from biodynamic grapes. This Pinot Noir is the first DEMETER certified wine made in New Zealand
Our Pinot Noir is made in an elegant appealing style which can be enjoyed when young but will also benefit from a little cellaring allowing it to develop more complex characters.
Richmond Plains is certified organic by AsureQuality New Zealand and certified biodynamic by Demeter.
Nose: Fragrant floral red cherry, strawberry and raspberry notes. A complex nose with earthy savoury and spicy characters.
Palate: Delicious sweet cherry and berry fruit flavours with some earthy forest floor and spicy notes. French oak gives subtle structure to this fruity Pinot Noir with a lovely lingering finish. Enjoy with salmon, roast poultry or red meats.
Vintage: Grapes bunches were thinned and hand harvested to maximise flavours and fruit quality. Grapes were picked on root/earth daysand fruit/seed days in the biodynamic calendar.
Winemaking: The fruit was crushed and de-stemmed and transferred to open tanks and fermented wild. Regular hand plunging over 14 days was carried out in the winery. The fermenting juice was then transferred into a French oak barrels (25% new, balance 1 year old) for maturation and to wait for secondary fermentation in the spring before bottling in the new year.
Organic: Certified Organic AsureQuality New Zealand.
Bioynamic: Certified Biodynamic DEMETER.
Vegan: This wine is suitable for vegan a diet.
Acidity: 5.5 g/L
Bright, even, ruby-red colour with some depth, a little lighter on edge. This has an elegantly concentrated and tightly bound nose of dark red berry and black cherry fruit, along with violet florals, liquorice, dark herb and mineral elements. The intensity builds with aeration and reveals a little oak spice interest. Medium-full bodied, the flavours of dark red berry and cherry fruit show notes of red plums, with good sweetness and richness. The palate has a concentrated, plush-textured core with underlying fine-grained tannin extraction and structure. The fruit sweetness prevails and the wine flows with drive to a concentrated, lingering finish of plums, liquorice, herbs, dark florals and nuances of oak. This is a rich, plush, concentrated pinot Noir with ripe fruit and fine concentration and grip.
